What Is an AC Compressor, and What Does It Do?

Writer • Feb 10, 2020

With each passing year and the release of newer and newer models, it seems as though air conditioning units are getting more and more complicated. In some sense, that’s true. In other ways, however, the innards of a standard air conditioner remain the same. A modern AC unit is a sophisticated assortment of wires and pipes designed to remove the heat from your home as efficiently as possible. And, as is the case with most HVAC systems, at the center of your air conditioning lies the compressor.

This all-important component is often referred to as the heart of an air conditioning system. But what is an AC compressor in Kalamazoo, MI, and what does it do? Read on to find out.

It’s about subtraction, not addition

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the job of your home’s air conditioning system was to supply cold air to your home, but that’s not actually the truth. Your home’s AC unit is meant to remove warm air, not necessarily provide cold air—and the piece that’s primarily responsible for that job is your AC compressor.

Things begin in the compressor, which pumps cold refrigerant throughout your home, like a heart pumping blood through the circulatory system. When the refrigerant runs through your house, it attracts the heat, which is compelled to move from areas of warmer air to areas of cooler air.

By the time the refrigerant reaches the end of its cycle, the heat has transformed it from a cooled liquid into a heated vapor. The compressor vacuums up all the vapor and vents it into the outside air. And, once again, because heat moves from warmer areas to colder areas, the heat from the vapor happily moves outdoors. As the heat seeps out of the vapor, it returns to a cooled, liquid form once again, just in time for another loop through your home.

Symptoms of compressor failure

It’s pretty easy to see how crucial it is to have a functioning AC compressor in Kalamazoo, MI. More often than not, however, your compressor won’t simply quit on you. Before it dies completely, it will cause the following problems:

  • If you’ve noticed that you have to crank up the AC to get relief from the heat, head to your air conditioning system’s outdoor unit. If the air coming off the unit is cool, it means your compressor isn’t working efficiently (or at all).
  • Are your utility bills on the rise? Some increase during the summer months is only natural, but if you’re seeing a substantial increase in your bills, it could be due to a faulty compressor.
  • Whenever you turn on your AC, you should hear your compressor fan switch on smoothly. If you hear a clicking or hissing noise, it could require some professional assistance.

Not sure if your AC’s compressor is on the fritz? No problem!
