5 Tips For Troubleshooting Your HVAC Unit

Getting your HVAC system working efficiently is important for the health and well-being of you and your family. When a problem occurs with your HVAC, it can be frustrating and stressful to decide whether to call the professionals or to try to troubleshoot the issue yourself. However, there are a few simple tips that you can use to troubleshoot your unit before calling a professional. 

1. Power Check 

Your AC and furnace are usually connected to an outlet by means of a cord, which is then plugged into a circuit breaker or fuse box. If your unit is not turning on, it could be because one of the breakers or fuses has tripped and cut off power. To fix this, simply flip the breaker back to its original position and then turn the system on again. 

2. Make Sure All Components Are Connected 

The air conditioner, furnace and outside unit – the condenser – must all be connected or plugged into power to work properly. If the power is off, your system won’t be able to start up and you’ll have to contact an HVAC professional. 

3. Check Breakers 

If your air conditioner doesn’t work, there may be an electrical issue in the home that needs to be repaired. To determine this, locate the main circuit breaker panel and examine the breakers to see which ones aren’t in the ON position. If the breakers look normal, flip them, and test your AC again. If the breaker immediately trips, you should call a professional and have them look at your AC to determine if there is a more serious issue. 

4. Clean The Fan Motors And Clogs 

A dirty or clogged fan motor can lead to the AC not functioning properly, especially during summer months when it’s hot and humid in many parts of the country. Using a broom to clear away debris from the fan can help keep it running smoothly. 

5. Troubleshoot Noises 

Your HVAC unit is designed to be quiet and operate efficiently, but sometimes there are issues that cause it to make strange sounds. For example, a damaged or worn belt can lead to a noisy system or a blown capacitor can make the fan motors buzz. If you hear any strange noises while troubleshooting your unit, it’s best to shut down the unit and call a professional for assistance.
