HVAC filters play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of air in a building or a home . They trap dust, dirt, allergens, and other particles and prevent them from circulating in the indoor air, which can cause respiratory problems. There are different types of HVAC filters, each with its unique features and benefits. In this blog post, we’ll explore the types of HVAC filters and their advantages.

Disposable Fiberglass Filters

The most common and affordable type of HVAC filter is the disposable fiberglass filter. These filters are made of 1-inch-thick spun fiberglass that traps large airborne particles and dust. They are not effective for trapping smaller pollutants, such as pollen and smoke, but they are good enough for maintaining clean air in homes and offices.

The inexpensive nature of disposable fiberglass filters makes them an ideal option for buildings or homes with non-sensitive occupants and not as much foot traffic. They must be replaced every 30 days, and cleaning them is not possible.

Pleated Filters

Pleated filters have a higher MERV rating, meaning that they are more efficient at filtering out different particles. Made from a denser paper or polyester blend, pleated filters with a high MERV rating trap more dust, allergens, and pollutants than fiberglass filters. They last longer than fiberglass filters and require less frequent replacement.

However, this type of filter is more expensive than fiberglass filters and should only be used in HVAC systems that can handle thick filters, otherwise it can obstruct the airflow which can cause the system to not work as intended.

Washable Air Filters

Washable air filters can be washed and reused. They are made of aluminum or mesh, so they trap more particles than fiberglass filters. They have a lower MERV rating but are more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and cost-effective in the long run. If the filter is dirty, then it can be washed, dried, and placed back. This type of filter is ideal when it comes to reducing waste and protecting the planet.

HEPA Filters

HEPA, which stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Arresting, filters are the most efficient HVAC filters at trapping airborne particles and pollutants. These filters satisfy international standards, trapping 99.97% of pollutants as small as 0.3 microns. This includes dust, pollen, smoke, and bacteria, thus making them ideal for hospitals, laboratories or homes of people with respiratory issues.

Because HEPA filters trap particles so effectively, they generally need to be replaced more frequently than other types of filters. Additionally, their thick and dense composition allows them to be more expensive than other filters and many air circulating systems are not powerful enough to handle the noise and limited airflow of HEPA filters.

UV Light Filters

UV Light Filters are also known as Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation Air Purifications Systems (UVGI). UV Light Filters use ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms like mold, viruses, and bacteria as they pass through the HVAC system. This type of filter is usually used in air ducts, cooling coils, or exhausts. UV Light Filters sanitize the air, removing odor-causing particles.

Despite being effective in killing microorganisms, the high cost of installation and maintenance frightens many customers away.

Final Thoughts

The choice of HVAC filter depends on many factors, including the building’s environment, the health of the occupants, and the how often the filtration system must be replaced. HVAC filters come in different types and efficiency levels, ranging from disposable fiberglass filters to washable and HEPA filters.

When deciding which filter to use, consider MERV rating, maintenance cost, and filtration needs. Ensure only the authorized technicians install HVAC filters to avoid damage to the system. Regular maintenance and replacement of HVAC filters should never be ignored, as this can ensure the efficiency of the air conditioning system and ensure the quality of air in a given environment .
